Collection: Pat Lipsky

(b. 1941)

Pat Lipsky’s career took off in the late 1960s, gaining recognition after her first solo show in New York City at Andre Emmerich Gallery as painter following the tendency of Lyrical Abstraction. This mode of painting was characterized by painterly gestures and loud bursts of color.  Lipsky’s work shifted towards a more geometric abstraction in the late 1970s – 1980s, exhibiting a bolder sense of color and a strong organization of line and shape. In these works, sensitive color relationships are emphasized by simple yet spatially complex compositions.

Pat Lipsky received her B.F.A. from Cornell University, later attending Hunter College for her graduate studies. As a student at Hunter, she studied with sculptor Tony Smith who served as a mentor to her.  She has received a number of awards including the Adolf and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant as well as the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grants.
