Collection: James Sienna
James Siena (born October 28, 1957) is an American contemporary artist known for creating art through self-imposed constraints, often referred to as visual algorithms. He establishes a basic unit and action—rules he decides upon before beginning a piece—and then repeats that structure to form complex compositions. While Siena first gained recognition for his enamel paintings on aluminum plates, his multidisciplinary practice includes drawing, printmaking, typed works on vintage typewriters, and sculpture.
His sculptures range from intimate, hand-crafted pieces made from everyday materials like toothpicks, bamboo skewers, string, and grapevines, to larger works in bronze and wood created in collaboration with the Walla Walla Foundry. Siena lives and works in New York City.
