Collection: Karen Kilimnik

(b. 1955)

Karen Kilimnik is an internationally recognized artist whose career began in association with the Scatter Art movement with her installations and collage-based works assembled from articles of pop culture. Particularly interested in cultural constructs of romance – fairytales, glamorous love stories and fantasy – she uses imagery and objects from commercial sources in her paintings, photographs and installations to underline the ways in which consumerism contributes to these accepted ideas. Through this practice of appropriation, Kilimnik is able to suggest the superficiality of romance as portrayed in contemporary media.

Karen Kilimnik studied at Temple University in Philadelphia. She has had numerous exhibitions worldwide, including solo shows at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, White Cube and Serpentine galleries in London and the Kunsthalle in Zurich. She continues to live and work in Philadelphia, PA.
