Alvin Hollingsworth (b. Harlem, New York, 1928 - 2000)

One of the first African-American comic book artists, he illustrated Captain Aero Comics and Wings Comics. Hollingsworth then transitioned to fine art in the 1970's and his work began to address cultural and political topics, including the Civil Rights Movement and the jazz scene of New York. He was Co-Founder of the Spiral Group with Romare Bearden, which aimed to advance the Civil Rights Movement through the arts. Hollingsworth was also a teacher at The City University of New York from 1980 to 1998.
