Peter Plagens (b. 1941) received his B.F.A. from the University of Southern California and his M.F.A. from Syracuse University. He is well known for his abstract, formalist paintings and use of symbols as well as his art critiques and contributions to Newsweek, Art Forum and The Wall Street Journal. In this image, a red circle surrounds a green iron cross with asymmetric lines and a skull-like shape with newsprint typography. Lincoln Center published the image in an edition of 144 to commemorate the New York Philharmonic’s Spring Festival of 1983.
